Urbandale (IA) Former Des Moines Buccaneers' defenseman Matt Read has been added to the Canadian team for the upcoming International Hockey Federation Men's World Championships, making him the lone United States Hockey League alumni on the roster. Read joins Team USA members Aaron Palushaj and Jeff Petry as one of three Buccaneers' alumni that will be playing in the World Championships.

The tournament is scheduled for May 4-19 in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

A native of Calgary, AB Read played for the Buccaneers from 2006-2007 and then went onto play four years at Division I Bemidji State. Following his senior season, in which he served as the Bemidji State captain, Read turned pro with the Philadelphia Flyers' organization as a free agent signee

In 2011-2012, Read made the Flyers' National Hockey League roster out of his first professional training camp and finished his rookie season with 47 points (24g, 23a) in 79 games. This season, during the NHL lockout, he played professionally in Sweden before re-joining the Flyers in January. Read had 24pts (11g, 13a) in 40 games this season.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are preparing for their 34th consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
