Rochester RazorSharks News Release
(Rochester, N.Y.)The Rochester RazorSharks announced today the signing of former St. Bonaventure University star Caswell Cyrus to a contract agreement for the 2005-2006 American Basketball Association season. Cyrus, a 6'9" power forward and center, is expected to report to camp with the other RazorSharks veteran players in mid-October.
"Caswell has great rebounding instincts and is a shot-blocking presence," said Brendan Rooney, Director of Player Personnel for the RazorSharks. "He has been out for a while so it will take some time to get his offensive game back to where it was, but Caswell is hungry to get back to playing so his work ethic will accelerate the process. We are very excited to get a player at his size and ability."
Cyrus was signed by the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA as a free agent in October of 2000 but did not see any action due to a knee injury. He ventured to France to play for Nantes in 2000-2001 where he averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds per game but re-injured his knee and returned to the United States.
Cyrus played four years at St. Bonaventure, leading the Bonnies to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 22 years as a senior in 2000. He grabbed 18 rebounds against Kentucky in the opening game of the tournament before losing to the Wildcats in overtime. Cyrus is currently the Bonnies all-time career leader in blocked shots with 289 in 114 career games (2.5 average). He ranks 12th in all-time rebounds (680) and 25th in all-time career scoring (1,121) at St. Bonaventure.
A native of St. Vincent Island in the Caribbean, Cyrus moved to the New York City area as a youngster then on to Pickering, Ontario after his freshman year of high school. He attended West Humber Collegiate High School in Toronto before accepting a scholarship to St. Bonaventure, where he currently holds the school record for most blocked shots in a season (99) and in a game (8).
Cyrus was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Third Team in 2000 when he averaged 12 points and 6.6 rebounds his senior season. He was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Defensive Team his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Cyrus was drafted in the second round of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) draft in 2000 as well as in the first round by the St. Louis Swarm of the International Basketball League (IBL) that same season.
The RazorSharks will open their inaugural season of play in the ABA on Saturday, November 5 at The Blue Cross Arena against the Buffalo Rapids. Individual game tickets and season tickets are now available at the Arena Box office or by calling the Rochester RazorSharks at (585) 232-9190.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
