Toledo Royal Knights News Release

Toledo, OH. The ABA Toledo Ice professional basketball team announced that Toledo native Melvin Newbern will be the team's head coach in the inaugural season starting in November. Newbern played at Scott High School, the University of Minnesota and in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons - and joins a large group of former NBA players now associated with the ABA.

"This is a great honor for me," Coach Newbern said. "After playing here for so long, I can't describe how wonderful it is to come back home."

The Ice will be playing in the ABA's Freddie Lewis Division and will begin training camp on October 1st to determine a 10-man roster with two alternates for the season opener November 4th at the Detroit Wheels. The home opener will be at 7pm November 26th against the Kentucky Colonels at the SeaGate Centre.
