Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs celebrated the 17th of March Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center by pulling on special St. Patrick's Day-themed jerseys. In the second game of a two-in-two series, the Sundogs skated against the Corpus Christi Rayz in what looks to be shaping up as a first-round Southern Conference playoff match up. The Rayz would rebound from a 5-2 loss on Friday night and skate past the Sundogs by a 4-1 mark.

In a first period much different from Friday night's start, the Corpus Christi Rayz would collect three unanswered goals to take a commanding lead into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play. Niklas Lindberg would open the scoring for the Rayz at 3:26 of the opening frame from Justin Quenneville and Todd Paul. Two minutes later Quenneville would put the puck past Sundogs' netminder Mike Wall to grab his second point of the game. Matt Turek and Paul would assist on the power play goal. With 5:07 to play in the period Corpus Christi would tally its second goal with a man advantage. Paul would notch his third point and first goal of the night on passes from Lindberg and Jason Baird.

The Sundogs would get on the board in the second period but not before the Rayz would grab their fourth goal of the game. Lindberg would register his second goal and third point of the contest from Quenneville, also his third point of the night. With 2:16 remaining in the middle stanza Cory Stillman would break the Sundogs' scoreless effort on a bouncing puck in front with assists going to Dan Laperriere and Brent Kelly. Jonathan Bernier would entice Adam Powell into a fight to try and gain momentum for his club but not before collecting cross checking, instigator and misconduct penalties at the same time.

Arizona would outshoot Corpus Christi 8-3 in the final frame but would be unable to solve Zelenewich. The Sundogs would continue to struggle on the power play, going 0-for-7 while allowing the Rayz to convert on two of their eight chances with a man advantage. Wall would stop 20 of 24 shots while Ron Vogel would get the win for the Rayz stopping 14 shots faced. Brent Zelenewich would take over for his teammate in the second period stopping 19 of 20 shots.

With the loss and an Amarillo win over New Mexico, the Sundogs sit in a tie for second place with the Gorillas, just four points back of division-leading New Mexico. Amarillo is the fifth team to clinch a playoff spot in the Southern Conference.

During the second intermission, the Arizona Sundogs Foundation donated $60,000 to six Northern Arizona non-profit agencies as part of their 'Team Up For Hope' campaign. In the final post-game jersey auction of the year, the Sundogs raised more than $47,000 for the Arizona Sundogs Foundation.

The Sundogs next host the New Mexico Scorpions at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley on Tuesday, March 20. Game time is set for 7:00pm. Tickets are available by calling 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), visiting www.gettix.net or stopping by the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
