Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
ICERAYS REWIND: The IceRays split a pair of games with the San Angelo Saints last weekend in a college-style home-and-home series, and snapped a season-high 5-game losing streak in the process. Friday at the San Angelo Coliseum, the Saints scored 5 power play goals and used a 44-save effort from Scott Reid in net to knock off the IceRays 6-3. The IceRays struck first in a period they thoroughly dominated from start to finish when Ken Richardson's (Peace Rivar, ALB) deflection slipped in between the pads of Scott Reid at :29 seconds of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Despite being out-shot 19-6 in the first 20 minutes, the Saints wouldn't go quietly getting 2 goals from Ryan Reid 2:45 apart to take a 2-1 lead.
After Cosmo Dupaul's (Pointe-Claire, PQ) put-back of his own rebound to tie the game, the Saints rattled off 3 unanswered goals from Brad Cook (2) and Troy Mann to take a 5-2 lead midway through the 3rd period. The Rays would get one back when Richardson picked up his second of the night deflecting a Brett Colborne (Clearwater, BC) shot from the point at 3:02 on the power play to bring the IceRays back to within 2 at 5-3. However, the Saints killed off 3 more IceRays' power plays, and picked up an insurance goal from Chris Peach to seal the 6-3 win. The IceRays out-shot the Saints 47-26, but were only 1-6 on the power play while the Saints were 5-10. Saturday night the teams returned to Memorial Coliseum for the backend of the home-and-home set. The Saints came out gunning again getting a goal from Troy Mann (his 5th point of the series) at 7:49 of the first period on the power play to take a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. However, the IceRays showed no signs of quitting and started the second frame with a goal from Jason Renard (Brooks, ALB) on a deflection in front of the net at :21 seconds of the 2nd period to tie the game at 1. After the Saints took a 2-1 lead later in the period, the IceRays would score the next four goals to move ahead 5-2 midway through the 3rd. Two of the goals came from Richardson, while John Sicinski (Mississauga, ONT) and Shaun Fairweather (London, ONT) picked up the other tallies. The Saints battled back to make it a 5-3 game with just over 5 minutes remaining, but Richardson clinched the victory scoring his third goal of the night and fifth of the weekend on a centering feed from Dupaul at 16:29 of the 3rd period to make the final score 6-3 IceRays. The Rays put over 40 shots for the second consecutive night on Saints goalie Scott Reid outshooting San Angelo 43-32. The IceRays also went 2-3 on the power play while limiting the Saints to just 2-8. Eddy Skazyk (Lockport, MB) stopped 29 shots to pick up his second win of the season.
SECOND HELPINGS: While the top line of Rob Giffin, John Sicinski, and Layne Roland continues to be the IceRays' most productive unit, Head Coach Al Sims may have found his next-best line. Shaun Fairweather, Ken Richardson, and Cosmo Dupaul combined to score 15 points this weekend on 7 goals and 8 assists. Richardson led the way with 5 goals while Dupaul tallied 1 goal and 4 assists. The biggest surprise of the weekend though might have been Fairweather. Cut earlier in the season to make room for the addition of Richardson, Fairweather returned to the Rays in style scoring a goal Saturday night and adding 4 assists over the weekend. The addition of Fairweather also seemed to help jumpstart the play of both Dupaul and Richardson. Combing into the weekend the 2 had combined to score just 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in their first 6 games as IceRays.
CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN: Meanwhile things keep getting better for Richardson who is expected to be named the IceRays first captain of the season sometime later this week. Richardson is tied for second on the team in goals scored with 6 and is second on the club with 50 penalty minutes. Look for Richardson to be wearing the 'C' against Laredo on Thursday night.
ES-SPECIAL-LY POOR: The IceRays penalty kill endured another tough weekend giving up 7 goals on 18 chances (61.1%). The penalty kill has been scored on in 8 games this year. For the season the IceRays are a league-worst 74.7% shorthanded (62-83).
