November 11, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release

PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The Ice practices Wednesday at the Pepsi Coliseum from 12-1:30 p.m. and Thursday at the Pepsi Coliseum from 9:45-11 p.m. The team also has a pre-game skate on Friday at the Coliseum from 10-10:45 a.m.

FINE SILVER: Ice goaltender Shawn Silver played worthy of his name this past weekend as the native of Thunder Bay, Ontario won his first two games in an Ice uniform with back to back victories over the Wichita Thunder. He stopped 23 of 24 shots in regulation and five of six in the shootout in Saturday's 2-1 win at Wichita and followed that performance with a 29-save, 2-1 victory Sunday from the Pepsi Coliseum. Overall numbers for the week included a 2-0-0 record, 0.96 GAA and a .963 save percentage. In the process, Silver lowered his GAA 80 points from the week before to 2.14, ranking him fourth in the CHL among goaltenders with at least five or more games.

BLISTERING BAIRD: Jason Baird continued his offensive tear last weekend as he extended his point streak to 11 games with four points (2G, 2A) in the three weekend contests. The second-year pro leads the Ice overall in scoring with 15 points (8G, 7A) and ranks in a tie for third in the CHL in points and a tie for second in goals.

"PK" PERFECTION: Despite the team's early season struggles offensively and on the power play, the Ice continues to perform admirably in the area of penalty killing. Indy has only allowed a power play goal in three of 11 games this year and has killed off 44 of its opponents' 49 power play chances overall this season which is good for fourth in the CHL. The team enters this weekend's play having killed of its last ten opponents' power plays.

PLAYER ACCOLADES: Netminding as a whole has been strong from Jamie Morris and Shawn Silver as the duo has combined for a 4-4-3 record, 2.56 GAA and a .911 save percentage...Kevin St. Jacques has four points (2G, 2A) in his last three games...St. Jacques is also the club's shootout "ace," as he has scored on three of four shootout chances this year...Bernie John has three assists in his last three games...Randy Holmes, with a helper on Sunday, is one point shy of 450 for his pro career...Justin Kearns and Nate Elliott lead the Ice in the plus/minus department with (+1) markings....Jason Baird leads the club with three power play goals.

TEAM DROPPINGS: Seven of the team's 11 games this year have been one-goal affairs with the Ice sporting a 3-1-3 clip...Indy is one of just four CHL teams yet to allow a shorthanded goal...After falling short in its nine previous shootouts, the Ice has now won two straight in the extra session...The Ice is last in the league in goals per game (2.09), but is strong defensively by just allowing 2.82 goals/game and 29.82 shots/game.

SCOUTING THE "APES": This weekend marks the first meetings of the year between the Ice and Amarillo Gorillas (formerly the Rattlers). Indy, who won both games last season, got production in last years' battles from current Ice players Kevin Popp (1G, 2A) and Jamie Morris (1-0-0, one shutout).

SHOOT-OUT AGAINST HUNGER: Friday night's game at the Pepsi Coliseum is Gleaners Food Drive "Shoot-Out Against Hunger." Fans are encouraged to bring to the game a canned good or non-perishable food item to help knock out hunger in Central Indiana. Prizes will be awarded throughout the night to the fans who helped out with donations.

ICE EXPECTED TO SIGN GIANT: Saturday's game at Conseco Fieldhouse is expected to be the debut of the world's largest hockey player in 7-7 Manute Bol. Bol, the former NBA giant, looks to bring his shot blocking skills to the Ice and help the squad continue its excellence in the penalty killing department.
