
Rays Hold Off Mudcats

Zebulon, N.C.â Juan Salas homered and drove in two runs to pace the Orlando Rays to a 5-3 win over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium Friday.
Leadoff hitter Joey Gathright went 3-5 with two runs scored, and the speedster from Hattiesburg, Miss. stole three bases on the night. Amado German went 2-4 with two doubles, a run scored and a RBI, while Jonny Gomes added a 1-4 effort that included a double, run scored and RBI.
Rays starting pitcher Jason Cromer (W, 1-1) picked up his first "AA" win of the season after limiting the Mudcats to one run on five hits over six innings. Josh Parker closed out the ninth for his 6th save, helping Orlando snap a two-game losing skid.
Orlando grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning, snapping a 14-inning scoreless streak, dating back to the 4th inning of Wednesday's 6-1 loss at Greenville. The win improved the Rays record to 20-26 on the second half and 52-63 overall.
The Rays and Mudcats continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:15, with Orlando sending RHP Gerardo Garcia (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against Carolina righty Randy Messenger (4-6, 5.54).
