Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The Tennessee Smokies took the series opener with the Mobile BayBears Friday night, 4-3, in front of 4,618 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Smokies Bucky Jacobsen extended his league-leading homerun total over Mobile's Jon Knott with two blasts and closer Mike Lyons earned his league-leading 29th save of the season, breaking his tie with the BayBears Rusty Tucker.

The BayBears scored first, in the first, as Humberto Quintero doubled home Todd Donovan. Quintero's hit was his first of three on the night. Mobile extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning. Jake Gautreau picked up his first of three hits with an RBI double, scoring Knott from second. Quintero was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score from first, however.

Tennessee tied the score as Jacobsen left the yard for the first time on the night. With two outs, Kevan Burns singled against BayBears starter Justin Germano. Jacobsen followed with a blast over the leftfield wall, tying the score at 2-2.

Mobile went ahead 3-2 in the sixth. Bobby Scales hit a pinch-hit, sacrifice fly with the bases loaded scoring Quintero. On the play, Gautreau was caught as he strayed to far from second, ending the inning.

Jacobsen struck again as he led off the top of the seventh with his second homerun of the night, this one off of reliever R.D. Spiehs. Yadier Molina put the Smokies ahead to stay with a sacrifice fly, scoring Papo Bolivar.

The BayBears and Smokies will play game two of their series Saturday night. Cory Stewart (11-6) will get the start for Mobile against Tennessee's Pat Collins (0-0).

Prior to the game, the Mark Harmon Celebrity Baseball Game will be played at Hank Aaron Stadium. The game - which features such names as former Major League All-Stars Rick Sutcliffe and Wally Joyner, San Diego Padres General Manager Kevin Towers, and, of course, Mark Harmon - will begin at 5:35.
