Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA - Modesto's offense went quiet on Sunday afternoon as they managed just six scattered singles in a 4-0 shutout loss to Visalia at John Thurman Field. The Nuts (19-24) are now just 2-5 against Visalia (27-16) this season.
Tom Belza broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with a two-out RBI double to put the Rawhide in front and they never looked back.
Visalia starter Kyle Schepel (2-1) ran into trouble in the third and fourth innings, loading the bases in both frames with just one out, but came through both situations unscathed. Schepel would settle down after the fourth, sending down his last eight in a row in a seven inning performance for the win.
Ben Alsup (3-4), who also lasted seven innings, took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits.
After a lead-off double by Michael Perez in the seventh, Belza drove him in and scored on a base hit to left that was misplayed by Brian Humphries, with the ball going past him to the fence as he went all the way around the bases to make it 3-0. David Nick hit a solo home run off of Leuris Gomez in the eighth to cap the scoring on the day.
Relievers Willy Paredes and Pat Schuster combined for the final six outs to finish off the game.
Modesto has now been shutout three times this season.
The two clubs will return to John Thurman Field on Monday night for game two of a three-game series. RHP Dan Winkler (5-1, 2.31) will make the start for the Nuts, opposite LHP Keith Hessler (2-1, 4.43) for the Rawhide. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
