Rawhide Home Runs Sink Giants In 12-3 Loss
August 26, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
Visalia's Kyle Greene hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning before major leaguer Justin Upton smacked a grand slam in the fifth leading the Rawhide to a 12-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Konrad Schmidt added a home run for Visalia as the Rawhide evened the series at a game apiece. The loss drops San Jose's second half record to 40-18 while they maintain an eight-game lead over the Stockton Ports (32-26) in the second half North Division race. Only 12 games remain in the regular season.
Schmidt (4-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) had a perfect evening at the plate while Upton (2-for-5, HR, 5 RBI) drove home five runs to lead a 15-hit Rawhide offensive attack. Wade Miley (1-0) earned the win on the mound in his California League debut after limiting the Giants to a pair of runs in six innings.
San Jose initially jumped ahead with a single run in the bottom of the third inning when Trent Kline hammered an RBI double off the fence in center field. Visalia though immediately answered in the top of the fourth as Schmidt singled with one out to break a string of eight consecutive hitters that had been retired by Giants starter Oliver Odle. Ryne White followed with a single to put runners on first and second before Greene drove a fly ball over the fence in right center field for a three-run homer and a 3-1 Rawhide advantage.
San Jose got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning as Roger Kieschnick doubled with one out before Conor Gillaspie's two-out RBI double to the fence in straightaway center field.
Visalia though responded as the first five hitters reached base safely against Odle in the top of the fifth with all five scoring runs. Brendan Duffy started the frame with a bunt single before David Cooper singled sharply into left. James Skelton then dropped down a bunt that was quickly picked-up by the catcher Kline as he fired a perfect throw to third base in an attempt to force out Duffy. However, the throw was dropped by the third baseman Gillaspie for an error to load the bases with none out. Upton was up next and the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder lined an 0-2 pitch from Odle over the wall in left center for a grand slam to make it 7-2. Schmidt then hit the very next pitch thrown by Odle over the fence in left center for the fifth run of the inning.
Odle (7-11) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits over four-plus innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked none.
Both teams plated single runs in the seventh inning with Schmidt delivering an RBI single in the top of the frame off of San Jose reliever David Mixon. In the bottom of the inning, Gillaspie lined a solo home run to deep right center field to bring the Giants to within 9-3.
Visalia continued their big night offensively in the top of the eighth with three more runs on RBI singles from Cooper and Upton and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schmidt.
