SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - While Inland Empire got the offensive boost it has been missing the past few games, so did Visalia as the Rawhide scored three runs in the eighth to win 11-8 Monday night and secure its first three-game sweep in San Bernardino since 1991.
The 66ers came back to tie the game at eight in the sixth against Chase Christianson. After a single and two walks to load the bases with a single out, Elian Herrera singled in two. With the bases juiced again, Billy Spottiswood came on to lead Visalia out of the inning, but promptly plunked Trayvon Robinson and walked Scott Van Slyke to tie it up.
The Rawhide pulled ahead for good in the eighth on an RBI single from Konrad Schmidt and two-run single to center by Ed Easley to bring the final score to 11-8 and finish off the series sweep over Inland Empire.
Visalia capitalized in the third, fourth, and eighth innings, scoring at least three runs in each frame. In the third, Brendan Duffy on an error and scored on Ollie Linton's triple. Taylor Harbin drew a walk from Josh Wall and James Skelton followed with a two-run double to center. Konrad Schmidt closed out the scoring in the inning by driving in Skelton from second on a single to center, making it 4-0.
The Sixers pulled within a run in the third on an RBI single from Herrera, who finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, and a two-run triple to left by Robinson who also drove in three.
In the fourth, the Rawhide scored four runs while knocking Wall out of the game to take an 8-3 lead.
Schmidt went 3-for-5 on the evening and 7-for-14 during the series with 3 doubles and 5 runs driven in. Harbin finished up the game 4-for-5 with 3 runs, a triple, and an RBI.
Spottiswood (4-2, 3.14) pitched 2 and 1/3 hitless innings with a walk to secure the win.
Jake McCarter (2-2, 4.32) surrendered the 3 go-ahead runs in the eighth on 2 hits and a walk, while striking out 1 to earn the loss.
Inland Empire begins a three-game set in Lake Elsinore Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Kyle Smit (0-1, 15.00) will make his second start for the 66ers against Storm LHP Nick Schmidt (1-4, 7.07). The Sixers return home to Arrowhead Credit Union Park Friday, July 31 for a Toyota of Redlands 50-cent Friday.
