Arizona Rattlers News Release
MESA, Ariz. - The Arizona Rattlers announce the re-signing of Second Team All-Arena DB/KR SPECIALIST VIRGIL GRAY for the 2012 season.
"We are very pleased that Virgil is coming back in 2012," said GM/HEAD COACH KEVIN GUY. "Virgil is like the quarterback on the defensive side of the ball, putting us in the right checks and the right defenses. He is also a high character man on and off of the playing field."
In Gray's first season with the Rattlers, he collected 79.5 tackles, 28 pass breakups and 10 interceptions. The defensive back's interception total (10) and pass breakups (28) place him as the Rattlers' single-season leader in both categories. As a return specialist, Gray's 62 returns for 1,445 yards and five touchdowns, for a 23.3 yard average, ranked him as the top AFL return specialist in the 2011 regular season, and second in Rattlers single-season return yards (1,445).
Gray earned the Week 12 Spalding Highlight of the Week honor for his 52-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown in a 63-42 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators. In Week 15, he earned JLS Ironman of the Week honors for his two kickoff returns for touchdowns in a 64-57 victory over the San Jose SaberCats.
In the playoffs, Gray started in all three games, seeing his best performance in a 62-33 victory over the Spokane Shock where he notched a 54-yard return for a touchdown, three pass breakups, 2.5 tackles and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a 37-yard touchdown.
Gray participated in the United Football League Omaha Nighthawks 2011 training camp.
