Rasquin Breaks up No-No, BK Falls

Brooklyn, NY - -- For eight innings, the Brooklyn Cyclones were hitless. The Cyclones were three outs away from being a part of the 82nd no-hitter in New York-Penn League history. Five days ago, TriCity was blanked by the Staten Island Yankees for the 81st no-hitter and tonight, they were almost on the right side of history.

Walter Rasquin - the third-leading hitter in the NYPL - kicked off the ninth with a triple, igniting the faithful at MCU Park. After two quick outs, Brooklyn brought in its first run of the game on a single by Quinn Brodey, and cut into the 3-0 deficit. When Reed Gamache walked, the tension rose. With a chance to win the game, Carl Stajduhar struck out looking to end the game.

"We just couldn't get it together," Cyclones manager Edgardo Alfonzo said. "Mama said, 'There are gonna be days like that.'"

The first three innings of the game provided a stalemate. Debora conceded a few hard hit balls - one off of his ankle - but no runs scored. For 'Cats starter Juan Robles, the first two innings were a breeze. No balls made it to the outfield. In the third, he surrendered two hard hit line drives that found the gloves of his defense. Alfonzo credited Robles on his cutter and his ability to change speeds.

Tri-City would score its first run in the fourth. JJ Matijevic ripped a one-hopper to right, Medina mishandled the ball and then kicked it, moving Matijevic to second. A Colton Shaver single with the infield in gave the 'Cats the lead it would not relinquish.

In the bottom half of the fourth, BKLYN had its best chance to tie the game. Byrd walked to first for the second time, stole second and advanced to third on a grounder. With two outs, Brodey had a chance to tie the game but popped up to left.

In the sixth, Adrian Tovalin hurt the Cyclones. His towering shot to right-center clipped Medina's glove and trickled away. With one out, Tolavin would be a third with a triple. A wild pitch would double the 'Cats lead, making it 2-0. A single by De La Cruz would make it 3-0 in the ninth, a necessary insurance run.

"It's hard to win like that," Alfonzo said. "Our reaction in the last inning is kind of hard. You have to give credit to their guys."
