June 1, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The River City Rascals received a lift after a heartbreaking loss the night before from left-hander Brian Keating who picked up his first win of the season in River City's 6-3 win over the Kalamazoo Kings. After allowing a run in the first inning, Keating shut down the defending Frontier League champions to a tune of just five hits in 7.2 innings pitched. The O'Fallon, MO native at one point retired nine straight Kings and ended the morning game with just two walks while striking out three.
The Rascals were trailing 1-0 in the second inning before John Santor launched his second home run of the season over the left field against Kalamazoo starter Dan Caldwell. River City took their first lead of the game when rookie Eric Chevalier hit the Rascals' first triple of the season that scored Geoff Desmond who singled earlier in the inning. One batter later, Eddie Guessford singled home Chevalier to give River City a 3-1 lead.
Eddie Kim made it a 4-1 game when he doubled for the second straight night to deep centerfield that scored Kirk McConnell. Geoff Desmond would pick up his league-leading 12th RBI on the season when he drove in Kim to give the Rascals a four run lead. Guessford would add another run RBI single in the 7th finishing the game 2-for-4 and his first two RBIs on the season.
Keating along with relievers Derrick Landavazo and Pat Evers did an excellent job of keeping the heart of the Kings' batting order off the base paths. Frontier League MVP, Pete Pirman and last night's offensive star, Ray Gill combined to go 1-for-8 with a pair of strikeouts. Landavazo got Pirman to ground out to second with two runners on to end the Kalamazoo rally in the bottom of the eighth. Evers allowed one hit in the ninth to pick his third save in as many chances.
The Rascals return home for a weekend series with the Florence Freedom on Saturday, June 3rd for Edward Jones Hat Night. The first 1,000 fans entering T.R. Hughes Ballpark will receive a baseball cap with the new Rascals colors courtesy of Edward Jones. Gates will open at 6:00pm and parking at T.R. Hughes Ballpark is always free. For tickets call 636-240-BATS or order online at www.rivercityrascals.com.
