Rapidz fall to Capitales, 7-6

(OTTAWA, ON) Sunday, July 13, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz began the second half of the season hosting former Expos greats Ron Piché, Jim Fanning, Claude Raymond, Warren Cromartie and Fernand Lapierre for "Expos Day" at Rapidz Stadium. Despite a strong effort, the Rapidz lost to their national rivals the Quebec Capitales 7-6 in front of a crowd of 2,781 at Rapidz Stadium.

The Rapidz wasted no time opening the scoring as both Juan Infante and Jose de los Santos got aboard for Jereme Milons who hit a three-run dinger onto Coventry Road for a 3-0 Rapidz lead after one inning.

The Capitales stuck back adding a run in the top of the second and third innings to reduce the Rapidz lead to 3-2 after three innings of play. In the top of the fourth, the visitors added two more runs to take the lead 4-3. Alex Nunez walked, Greg Stevens doubled, Jean-Michel Rochon-Salavas hit an RBI fly ball and Jose Contreras singled to score the runs.

After adding another run in the top of the sixth, the Rapidz responded with two in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at five. Scotty McKnight singled and Juan Infante walked for Jose de los Santos who hit a double to drive in the two runs to tie the game.

Both teams added one more run before Quebec's Patrick D'Aoust hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory for the Capitales 7-6.

Earning the win for the Capitales was Jason Schutt (2-0) allowing zero hits, runs, walks and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Cardoza Tucker (0-2) was credited with the loss for the Rapidz, pitching one inning, allowing one run (earned) on one hit, with one walk and zero strikeouts.

The Rapidz continue their three game series against the Quebec Capitales Monday, July 14 at 7:05pm. Tomorrow will be "CHEO Gate Night" at Rapidz Stadium where 50% of all the game proceeds will be donated to the CHEO Foundation. Pitching for the Rapidz will be Ottawa native Mike Kusiewicz (2-5, 4.28 ERA) against Kevin Beavers (3-3, 5.08 ERA) for the Capitales.
