Ottawa Voyageurs News Release
(BROCKTON, MA) June11, 2008 - The Brockton Rox second attempt at a comeback victory fell short on Wednesday afternoon as the Ottawa Rapidz won the second game of the three-game series 5-4. Brockton had trailed 3-0 for the second consecutive game, but managed to take a 4-3 lead before Ottawa scored twice in the seventh inning on the way to this important win.
The Rapidz opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning against Rox LHP Rolando Viera. Ottawa had four men reach base before Viera was able to record an out in the inning. The Rapidz extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning on a solo home run by CF Jared Lemieux.
As Viera settled down, the Rox offense scored twice in the third inning on an RBI single by CF Ervin Alcantara, and a sacrifice fly by 3B Phillip Cuadrado. Viera cruised through the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings opening the door for Brockton's offense take the lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, 2B Melvin Falu drove a two-run double to right-centerfield to score Thigpen and DH Tony Gonzalez and give the Rox a 4-3 advantage.
However the Brockton lead was short-lived. Ottawa loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, and tied the game with an RBI single by 3B Juan Infante. The Rox went to the bullpen and summoned RHP Matt Zachary to relieve Viera, but the bases were still loaded with only one out. The very next batter, SS Felix Escalona reached on an error by Rox 3B Phillip Cuadrado, and the eventual winning run came home to score on the play.
Ottawa reliever, RHP Angelo Burrows pitched three scoreless innings to preserve the win for Rapidz' starter LHP Fraser Robinson. Burrows recorded his second save of the season, while Robinson earned his first win as a professional.
The third and final game of the series will take place on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium as the Rox host the Rapidz at 7:05 PM. LHP Chris McDonough (2-0, 7.11 ERA) will start for Brockton opposite LHP Mike Kusiewicz (0-4, 4.28 ERA) of the Rapidz.
