Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Wednesday, October 2, 2013) - The Colorado Rapids announced on Wednesday that the team will wear HelpColoradoNow.org on the front of its jerseys for Saturday's match against Seattle Sounders FC, in an effort to help support fundraising efforts relating to the recent floods throughout the state. The jerseys will feature HelpColoradoNow.org, a website that provides information on how to help Coloradans in need, whether through donations of money or materials, or by volunteering. Saturday's match kicks off at 8 p.m. MT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, and will be broadcast live nationally on NBC Sports.
"As Coloradans, we were all affected by the recent flooding, and our hearts go out to the many who lost loved ones or their homes," said Rapids President Tim Hinchey. "We are proud of our state and want to do everything possible to assist in this time of need, and we hope that bringing attention to www.HelpColoradoNow.org will encourage others to get involved as well."
"Seeing the damage that was done because of the floods has been difficult, and a lot of my friends had damage to their houses or were affected," said Shane O'Neill, Colorado Rapids defender, of Boulder. "This weekend, we want to play for the fans, and with HelpColoradoNow.org across our chest we hope to bring some joy to the people that were affected, and help raise money to make their lives a little easier."
HelpColoradoNow.org is a partnership between the Colorado Division of Emergency Management and the Colorado Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, and brings together government agencies and non-profit organizations to assist communities affected by disasters. It includes links to various organizations accepting donations of money and materials in their response to the wildfires, as well as information on volunteering to help the state recover from these disasters.
The Rapids' special, game-worn jerseys from Saturday's match, featuring HelpColoradoNow.org across the chest, will be auctioned off to the public with proceeds benefitting organizations supporting disaster relief. Kroenke Sports Charities has already donated $50,000 to the Salvation Army to assist in their support of those affected by the flooding throughout the state.
This is the second time that the Rapids have worn HelpColoradoNow.org on their jerseys, with the first coming in the July 4, 2012 match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, following devastating wildfires throughout Colorado.
Saturday, the Rapids take on U.S. Men's National Team captain Clint Dempsey and the Seattle Sounders in Colorado's second to last home game of the regular season. Special sideline seating will be available for this game, and tickets are available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRaipds.com.
