Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids extended their unbeaten preseason run to seven games on Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Norwegian side Eik Tønsberg in Antequera, Spain. Chris Henderson scored his third goal of the preseason for the Rapids, whose preseason record now stands at 5-0-2.
Despite controlling possession and creating a series of chances in the first half, the Rapids were unable to get on the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes. Tønsberg played a typical Norwegian style from their 4-5-1 formation, bunkering in on the defensive end to absorb the Colorado pressure and trying to catch the Rapids on the counterattack with a long ball. However, that approach did not yield any actual results, as Rapids keeper Scott Vallow was rarely called upon to make a save.
After dominating the opening half, the Rapids got their reward early in the second half when Henderson put his team in front 1-0. Left back Michael Erush started the attack with a well-played ball down the left wing for Darryl Powell. The Jamaican international hit a superb first-time ball into the middle for Henderson, who slotted a shot past the Tønsberg keeper from 20 yards out. Henderson's goal marked the sixth time this preseason that the Rapids had scored first in a match.
The lead would last for about 15 minutes before the Norwegians found an equalizer with their first real scoring chance of the match. Vallow was screened on the shot after a Tønsberg midfielder had carried the ball into the box before putting a shot on frame to tie the score at 1-1.
The Rapids return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9 at the Antequera Golf Hotel when they take on Córdoba of the Spanish Second Division. On Sunday, Córdoba drew 1-1 with U.D. AlmerÃa and is now in 11th place.
