Rapids Sign Defender Brenton Griffiths

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, April 30, 2013) - The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has signed defender Brenton Griffiths, the club's first selection in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft out of the University of South Florida. The Jamaican defender has been with the club since preseason, and has played in all four of the Rapids Reserves games in 2013.

"Brenton is a solid, young defender who is eager to learn," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "We've been encouraged by his effort and tenacity since he began practicing with us, and we're pleased to add him to our roster."

Griffiths, a 22-year-old from Spanish Towne, Jamaica, has logged 245 minutes at central defender for the Rapids Reserves in four matches (three starts) in 2013. He played his junior and senior seasons at the University of South Florida, scoring four goals in 36 games for the Bulls. His first two collegiate seasons were spent at Tyler Junior College in Texas, where he helped guide the squad to the 2009 and 2010 NJCAA National Championship while also leading the Apaches to a 41-0-1 record during his two years. Griffiths has also played for the Jamaican Under-17 and Under-20 National Teams.

The Rapids take on Toronto FC this Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. MT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, with a special 5280 Package presented by Westerra Credit Union available, giving fans four tickets and $20 in Rapids Cash, valid at the concession stands and team store, for just $52.80.
