COMMERCE CITY, CO. (Thursday, January 24, 2008) - The Colorado Rapids selected four players in today's 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft to complement their selections in last week's SuperDraft.
The Rapids took forward Kevin Forrest, midfielder Cesar Zambrano, goalkeeper Mike Graczyk and midfielder Daniel Antunez.
Kevin Forrest established himself as one of the top goal scores in the nation playing for the University of Washington from 2003-2007. A four-year starter for the Huskies, Forrest earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2006 and garnered First Team NSCAA/adidas All-Far West Region and NSCAA Scholar All-American selections that same year. He finished his collegiate career, tallying 34 goals and seven assists in 68 games played. Forrest was also a two-time selection to the First Team All-Pac-10 and Pac-10 All-Academic squads.
Cesar Zambrano led the University of Illinois at Chicago Flames this past season in goals (six), assists (seven) and points (19) en route to 2007 All-Horizon League First Team honors. The 2007 Horizon League Tournament MVP, a three-time All-League selection and a 2006 NSCAA/adidas All-Great Lakes Region honoree, he finished his career with 15 goals and 12 assists. Zambrano served as a co-captain on a 2007 UIC side that advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
Graczyk started all 19 games for the New Mexico Lobos in 2007 and posted an impressive 0.74 goals against average. The âkeeper backstopped the Lobos all the way to the College Cup Final in 2005 and played with the Des Moines Menace in the Premier Developmental League (PDL) this past summer.
Antunez comes to the Rapids from the University of Hartford after playing two seasons for the Hawks. The midfielder was an All-Conference and third team All-Region pick after scoring three goals and adding four assists from his wide position.
All supplemental draft selections are expected to report to Colorado on Saturday for preseason training. The Rapids open their season on March 29 when they take on the Los Angeles Galaxy at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in a 7:30 p.m. (MT) kickoff. Season tickets are available by calling the Rapids at (303) 825-GOAL or online at www.coloradorapids.com.
