Colorado Rapids News Release
It has been a good few weeks for Colorado Rapids' USL affiliate Charlotte Independence, as they have recorded two consecutive victories, two successive shutouts and remain unbeaten over the past three games.
On top of that, two Charlotte players have been named USL Player of the Week in consecutive weeks, and both are on loan from the Rapids.
Marlon Hairston is the most recent recipient after he recorded a goal and an assist to lead Charlotte Independence to a 3-0 victory against the Richmond Kickers last Friday. Hairston earned 65 percent of the vote, which was conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market.
The voting panel decided on Hairston based upon the fact that he was a 'constant threat down the right, set up Charlotte's opening goal, (and) capped the win with a fine finish.'
This recognition comes just a week after on-loan Rapids goalkeeper John Berner was noted for his fine performance against Louisville City FC (May 2). Berner was named USL Player of the Week for the seventh week of the 2015 season after he recorded a six-save shutout to lead his side to its first win in club history, a 1-0 victory against Louisville. Berner earned 43 percent of the vote.
Caleb Calvert has been gaining valuable minutes, featuring as a substitute in all six games to date. Carlos Alvarez, who joined the Independence on loan last week, made his debut in the victory over Richmond, playing the last 27 minutes off the bench.
The Independence will aim to make it three wins in a row, and four games unbeaten, when they travel to Harrisburg City Islanders this Saturday, kickoff 5:00 p.m MT. The teams met three weeks ago in North Carolina, with the match ending 1-1.
