Rapids-Heavy USMNT Begins Gold Cup Run
July 9, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release
Three Colorado Rapids will begin their quest to help the United States lift a seventh Concacaf Gold Cup this weekend. Kellyn Acosta, Jonathan Lewis and Sam Vines all joined the team in Kansas City this week ahead of the tournament.
Acosta has 31 caps for the senior team scoring two goals, and most recently he helped the USMNT win the Concacaf Nations League back in June. Lewis has seven appearances with the senior team also scoring twice, he was most recently with the US U-23s in their attempt to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics back in March. A Colorado native and Homegrown left back, Vines has three appearances with the full US team and was also a part of the U-23 Olympic Qualifying squad this past spring.
Prior to the Nations league win, the last Rapids player to lift a trophy with the USMNT was Tim Howard as part of the 2017 Gold Cup team.
The US begins their tournament run on Sunday against Haiti and with three Group B matches in seven days, head coach Gregg Berhalter figures to use his entire roster so the three Rapids will likely be called upon in different scenarios.
