Colorado Rapids News Release
Rapids vs. Chivas USA Head-to-Head
The Colorado Rapids so far are undefeated against Chivas USA, owning a 3-0-1 advantage. The Rapids are 2-0 against Chivas at The Home Depot Center, where they have outscored them 9-4 in four games.
Coundoul and Cooke League Leaders
Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and midfielder Terry Cooke are both leading Major League Soccer in separate departments. Coundoul is currently the #1-ranked goalkeeper in MLS with a 0.77 Goals-Against-Average. Cooke is currently the #1 assist man in MLS, with 6 assists to date, more than any other player in the league.
Rapids- Chivas USA Connections
Saturday night's game will mark the first time Thiago Martins will face his former Chivas USA teammates. The Rapids acquired Martins from the New York Red Bulls earlier this season. Martins was traded to the Red Bulls from Chivas USA for Ante Razov in January 2006.
Another Local Talent Making it Big
Colorado Springs native Daniel Wasson scored his first career goal with the Rapids last weekend in the club's 2-2 tie against Real Salt Lake at Rice Eccles Stadium. Wasson, who was acquired by the Rapids in the 2006 MLS Draft, had only played three minutes this season with the first team, but made the best out of his opportunity when Fernando Clavijo put him into the lineup with 10 minutes to go against their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals. His goal in the 84th minute gave the Rapids the momentary lead, but the game was tied by the locals in the 88th minute.
Clean Sheet Bouna
Bouna Coundoul's clean sheet against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night marked his second career shutout. The second year goalkeeper has posted a 2-1-1 record since coming in as a sub for the injured Joe Cannon on May 13 at Columbus. The Senegal native has yet to lose a game when starting between the pipes for Colorado, having posted a 2-0-1 record when starting, and allowing only 2 goals in three games.
Dedi Ben-Dayan's First of 2006
Israeli international Dedi Ben-Dayan notched his first goal of the 2006 season in the club's1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ben-Dayan had come close to scoring on several opportunities throughout the first half against the defending MLS champs, and finally found redemption on a great strike that beat the LA defense. Dedi celebrated his 1st goal of the '06 campaign by leaping onto a sideline fieldboard and balancing atop it while celebrating with the exuberant crowd.
The Race for the MLS Golden Boot
With five goals from eight games, Rapids forward Jovan Kirovski is tied for fourth place in MLS's Golden Boot race. Kirovski is tied with Salt Lake's Jeff Cunningham, Chivas USA's Ante Razov, Dallas' Kenny Cooper and DC United's Aleko Eskandarian. Houston's Brian Ching, who has scored seven goals in six games, five of them against Colorado, is at the top of the table, while FC Dallas' Carlos Ruiz is in second place with 6 goals scored. DC United's Jaime Moreno is in third place with 6 goals in 10 games.
Assist Man Terry Cooke
Englishman Terry Cooke's six assists in nine games have him in first place in that department in the league. In second place is New England's Jose Cancela, with 4 assists in 6 games. Cooke, the former Manchester United midfielder, also recently tied the Rapids' record for the most assists in one game, along with Colombian international Carlos Valderrama and former Rapids stalwart Ross Paule, with three.
Local Talent Gets Playing Time
Continuing with their constant efforts to identify and develop local talent, the Colorado Rapids have already had two local players on the pitch representing the club this year. Fort Collins native Colin Clark, who played at all levels in the state of Colorado, made his MLS debut with the Rapids on Saturday, April 29 in the 1-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo. Another local talent, Daniel Wasson, who grew up in Colorado Springs, made his debut in the 2-1 win over D.C. United and scored his first career goal on Saturday, May 27 in the 2-2 tie against Real Salt Lake. The Rapids have the third most local players in their roster of all the six Western Conference teams, and the fourth most in Major League Soccer. The Galaxy and Chivas USA lead the pack, followed by the Red Bulls. Here is the count of local players with their respective club: Chivas USA (10 players born in CA); Los Angeles Galaxy (9 players born in CA); Red Bulls (6 players born in NY/NJ); Colorado Rapids (5 players born in CO); DC United (4 players born in DC metro area); Chicago (2 players born in IL), New England (2 players born in NH and RI), Dallas (2 players born in TX), RSL (2 players born in UT); Houston (1 player born in TX), Kansas City (1 player born in MO) and Columbus (1 player born in OH).
DC & Columbus Go Winless All-Time at INVESCO Field
With the 2-1 win over DC United on Saturday, May 6th, the Rapids have closed another page in the team's history. With their victory over DC, they assured themselves an all-time undefeated record against United at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Saturday's game was the last time United will ever play at INVESCO Field, with the Rapids moving to their new stadium next season. The Rapids never lost to DC at INVESCO, recording a 4-0-2 record against DC and outscoring them 7 goals to 3 since 2002, the first year of the Rapids' occupancy at the stadium. The Rapids hold the same record against the Columbus Crew, having never dropped a game to that Eastern Conference team either at INVESCO Field.
Rapids All-Time vs. Opponents at INVESCO
The Rapids will be opening their new stadium in Commerce City in April 2007, and as they close their final season at INVESCO Field, the numbers tell the story of a home field advantage that will only increase at the new facility. DC and Columbus have already played their final games at the stadium and the records will be updated as opponents play their final games at the mile high venue this season.
Rapids Final All-Time Records vs. Opponents at INVESCO Field:
vs. DC United (4-0-2)
vs. Columbus (4-0-2)
