Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, CO. (Saturday, June 21, 2008) - After going 12 games without a draw to open the season, the Colorado Rapids battled the defending MLS champion Houston Dynamo to a 0-0 draw in front of 13,220 fans at Dick's Sporting Goods Park Saturday night.
The 12 games without a tie ranks second in team history after the 16 in 2000, the first year after MLS dropped the shootout. The Rapids last tie in MLS play was on September 16, 2007 against Chivas USA.
Colin Clark and Omar Cummings saw their headers hit the post and go just wide, respectively, in the waning minutes.
In the 89th minute, Terry Cooke played a cross into the head of Clark who rose above two Dynamo defenders only to have his shot glance off the post.
In stoppage time it was Clark with the cross that Cummings headed just wide of the goal.
It was Colorado who were the aggressors most of the game as they were looking for their second straight home victory.
Pat Onstad tipped a Clark cross out for a corner kick as Tom McManus waited on the far post in the second minute.
Cummings flashed a shot across the face of the Houston net in the fifth minute after he collected a deflected Ugo Ihemelu pass.
Preston Burpo was forced to charge out of his net in the 24th minute to quash a Dynamo attack as he out raced Brian Mullan to the ball.
In the 28th minute, Burpo got enough of a Stuart Holden header to deflect it off of the crossbar.
Cummings nearly headed the Rapids into the lead in the 53rd minute, but his nod of a Cooke cross went just wide of the net.
In the 61st minute, Burpo dove to cover his far post as a Brian Ching shot flashed across the goal.
After an 18 minute stoppage for a lighting malfunction, play resumed in the 68th minute.
The Dynamo appeared to score in the 78th minute when Brad Davis struck a free kick off the crossbar, and Ching put the ball into the net, but the Hawaiian was ruled for a hand ball, nullifying the goal.
Next week, Colorado hits the road for their third away match in four weeks when they travel to Ohio to face the Columbus Crew on Saturday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. MT.
