COMMERCE CITY, COLO. (Saturday, April 25, 2009) - The Colorado Rapids moved their all-time record against the LA Galaxy at Dick's Sporting Goods Park to 3-0-1 with a 1-1 draw Saturday night.
Colorado held a 1-0 lead till the 82nd minute when Landon Donovan evened the result scoring the Galaxy's first-ever goal for Los Angeles in the three-year history of Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
These two teams have become very familiar with each other playing for the third time in this month; two regular season matches and a U.S. Open Cup play-in match.
The first half saw both teams looking to find a rhythm and control of the match. The Galaxy applied the earlier pressure on goal out-shooting the Rapids 7-to-2 in the first 45 minutes of play, as the team went into the break locked at 0-0.
In the 44th minute, Nick LaBrocca entered the match for Kosuke Kimura after the defender's collision with Preston Burpo off an LA corner kick left him feeling a bit hazy. Kimura lay on the field for a moment, but was able to jog off unassisted. LaBrocca would finish the game playing in the back four marking the first time this season he assumed that role.
The Rapids tallied their lone goal of the night in the 60th minute from the left leg of Colin Clark. Clark's first goal of the season was set up by Omar Cummings and Mehdi Ballouchy. He created the scoring opportunity after creativity turning back inside to elude the defender and bury the ball in the back of the net just beyond the diving reach of goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
The Rapids were not able to secure their first shutout victory of the season, as the Galaxy scored their equalizer in the 82nd minute. Burpo made a great save on an Edson Buddle shot right down the middle to the penalty area, as the rebound deflected straight to Chris Klein. Klein fired the ball back across the goal, as Donovan redirected it to the back of the net.
The Rapids will play the second match in their first back-to-back home games of the season next weekend when they host their Rocky Mountain Cup rival Real Salt Lake on Saturday, May 2 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park at 7:30 pm.
