CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The No. 8 Rice Owls are the only undefeated team (2-0) in the Whataburger College Classic after Saturday night's 5-1 triumph over Texas Tech. Saturday afternoon, No. 23 TCU pulled to 1-1 in tournament action, blanking Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 behind the pitching of starter Chance Corgan. Saturday's games, played under nearly ideal weather conditions, drew a crowd of 5,922 to Whataburger Field, bringing the two-day attendance total to 11,424.

Rice starter Ryan Berry (3-0) held the Raiders in check, allowing an unearned run and four hits over seven innings of work. His 11 strikeouts, a career high, were the most by an Owl this season. Bobby Bramhall earned his 2nd save with two scoreless innings.

With Rice (13-7) trailing 1-0 in the 4th, Jordan Dodson lifted a two-run homer over the left-center field fence, putting the Owls ahead to stay. Dodson finished the night with three RBI's, giving him six for the weekend. Right fielder Chad Lembeck contributed by going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.

Texas Tech's lone tally came in the fourth when Joey Kentworthy scored on a perfectly-placed bunt by Doug Thennis that hugged the first base line. Aaron Odom (3-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, through six innings.

In the afternoon match-up, Corgan (2-1) tossed eight shutout innings to lead the Horned Frogs. He allowed five hits, struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Junior Sam Demel worked a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Senior center fielder Keith Conlon staked TCU to a 1-0 lead with his fourth homer of the season in the first. He finished the afternoon 3-for-4. Third baseman Steven Trout and designated hitter Matt McGuirk knocked in the other runs for the Horned Frogs, who improved to 11-5.

The Islanders, now 12-8, got a strong performance from senior southpaw Emerson Trager (3-3), who was charged with all three runs, two earned, on eight hits over seven innings. Shortstop Bryan Gerondale was the only Islander with two hits, as he singled and doubled in four at-bats. The junior from Galveston is now batting .360.

The shutout was TAMUCC's first of 2007. The last time the Islanders failed to score was May 7th, 2006, when they dropped a 4-0 decision at Stephen F. Austin on the final day of the season.

The tournament concludes with a pair of games Sunday. TCU and Texas Tech (14-7) square off at noon and the Islanders and Owls meet at 4:00 p.m.
