Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Rangers will help launch a pre-event for the 4th Annual Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Day on October 1st from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

Come see the Rangers take on the Fire Fighters training course at the Waterloo Region Emergency Services Training & Research Complex located at 1001 Erb's Road, RR#3, Waterloo, ON, N2J 3Z4.

The Kitchener Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Committee and the Rangers invite media and fans to come watch the Rangers in action.

The players will attempt the complete Fire Fighter's training course including the following:

The Hose Pull: Competitor pulls a 5/8 inch rope to drag a donut roll of fire hose (45 pounds) across the roadway. This Task is complete when the donut roll clears the line and is then picked up & placed in the designated container. Proper placement is on or in the container, with no part of the donut roll touching the road. Once the competitor has the donut roll of fire hose in the container he/she passes off the forcible entry tool to next competitor who is on or moves to the force machine.

The Forcible Entry: Competitor uses a Trusty Cook 8-pound shot mallet to move the beam. This Task is complete when the end of the beam crosses the line. Upon completion of this task, competitor places the mallet on the designated 4' x 4' area and passes off the forcible entry tool to next competitor.

Rescue Run: Competitor runs 140 feet around the hydrants as fast as he/she can, then passes off the forcible entry tool or shoulders a 1 3/4 inch fully charged fire hose line.

Hose Advance: Competitor shoulders a 1 3/4 inch fully charged fire hose line and drags it 75 feet. Once the nozzle crosses the 75 foot mark, the competitor opens the nozzle, hits the designated target with the stream of water, shuts the nozzle and places it on the ground. If the nozzle is not shut before it is placed down, the competitor must go back and close it before passing the forcible entry tool. Failure to do so results in a 5 second penalty. Once the hose advance is complete the competitor moves to the next competitor, who is stationed between the target and victim, and passes off the forcible entry tool.

Victim Rescue: After the exchange, competitor moves to the victim rescue where a 165 pound Rescue Randy mannequin, plus coveralls and boots, must be dragged backwards a distance of 100 feet. Carrying the dummy is not permitted. The mannequin must not be grasped by its clothing or appendages. The Relay is complete when the last competitor (team member)crosses the line at the finish line with the mannequin.

The Rangers Challenge you to enter a relay team of 3- 6 members in the Media/VIP/Supporters Fire Fighter Combat Challenge event on October 11th at the 4th Annual Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Day Event. While having similarities to the actual Fire Fighters Challenge, it is slightly easier!

The Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Day is for visitors and members of the community, uniformed emergency services, military and surviving families of our fallen to gather at the Fallen Firefighters Monument in Civic Centre Park and pay tribute to fallen firefighters, police and paramedics. The monument presently commemorates 10 of Kitchener's fallen brothers and pays tribute to all the fallen.

This year however we sadly will be unveiling & dedicating two additional bronze commemorative fire helmets in recognition of Capt. James Langton & Capt. James Rebbeck who paid the ultimate sacrifice in late 2007 succumbing to cancers &/or diseases as a result of their careers as professional Fire Fighters. In addition, we will recognize the 10 year anniversary of Waterloo Regional Police Constable David Nicholson who paid the ultimate sacrifice during a rescue attempt at the Parkhill Dam in Cambridge. At 12:45 pm a processional parade with emergency services & military personnel will commence followed by a Memorial Ceremony @ 1:00 pm.

While remembering and honouring the sacrifices made, we feel confident that to establish a focus on the sense of family, friendship, community and celebration is something the fallen would want. Hence we proudly announce the Firefighters' Family FunFest 9:30 am-12:30 pm and want you to be a part of it!
