Rangers Take 1-0 Series Lead

Kitchener, ON: Steve Downie scored twice tonight and added a pair of assists leading the Rangers to a 6-4 win over the visiting Sarnia Sting in game one of their playoff series.

Sarnia jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period silencing the Rangers fans. Nick Spaling put the Rangers on the board with his first of the playoffs at 16:24. Thirty-eight seconds later Steve Downie tied the game while on the power play.

In the second period Spaling scored his second of the game just :58 seconds into the period. Kevin Henderson put the Rangers up by two beating Peter VanBuskirk at 7:56. Former Ranger Craig Voakes brought the Sting to within a goal at 12:00 beating John Murray.

After the Sting scored at 5:30 of the third period to tie the game at 4-4, Matt Martello restored the Rangers lead with the eventual game-winner at 7:41. Steve Downie added an insurance marker at 9:31 to seal the game one victory.

John Murray picked up the win turning aside 34 shots.

Fan Appreciation winners included: John Wettlaufer who was the Grand Prize winner of the trip for 2 to the 2007 Memorial Cup, Mary Hofer won the Home Hardware gift card and Lisa Schmitt won the VIA Rail travel certificate.

The Rangers next home playoff game is Sunday, March 25th against the Sarnia Sting. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
