Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Kitchener Rangers made two selections in the 2019 CHL Import Draft on Thursday.
In Round 1 with the 35th overall pick, the Rangers selected Finnish defenceman Ville Ottavainen of Karpat Oulu B. It was the 34th selection made on the day, following passes by other CHL member teams.
The 16-year-old registered 9 goals, 25 assists for a total of 34 points in 49 regular season games played with Karpat Oulu B. Ottavainen played four games for Finland's U17 national team where he tallied a goal and an assist. Following the 2018-19 season the 6.03, 183-pound defenceman was named to Jr. B SM-sarja First All-Star Team.
With our second pick slotted 95th overall, the Rangers selected Swedish defenceman Axel Bergkvist of Leksands IF in Round 2. It was the 72nd selection made on the day, following passes by other CHL member teams.
The 19-year-old defenceman was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the 7th round, 200th overall at the 2019 NHL Draft.
Bergkvist dressed in 23 regular season games with Leksand's IF J20 SuperElit squad last season, registering 12 goals and 21 points with a plus/minus rating of +16. As a member of Leksands IF in the Allsvenskan league he tallied 3 goals, 7 assists for a total of 10 points in 36 games played.
The two-round draft took place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL's three leagues using an inverse order of final regular season standings within each league from the 2018-19 season. The Western Hockey League's Swift Current Broncos held the number one pick, followed by the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Acadie-Bathurst Titan who selected third overall. Each team in the CHL is permitted to dress and play a maximum of two import players each season who are selected annually through the CHL Import Draft.
