Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Saginaw Spirit defeated the Kitchener Rangers 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Brandon Saad scored and added two assists for Saginaw, while Michael Catenacci recorded the lone Rangers goal.
Saginaw opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period. Franky Palazzese stopped one Spirit shot but could not contain the rebound, allowing Carlos Amestoy to collect the puck and snap it into the net. The freshman centre's fourth of the year was assisted by team-scoring leader Vincent Trocheck and Steve Strong.
The Spirit opened a two-goal lead with five minutes remaining in the frame. Brandon Saad carried the puck with speed into the Rangers' zone and threw it in front. Palazzese stopped a close range attempt by Josh Shalla, but Michael Fine was on the doorstep to chip in the rebound. The goal was the overage winger's 18th of the season.
The Rangers led shots on goal in the first period, holding a 19-15 advantage.
Saginaw extended their lead to 3-0 in the second period, when Fine fired a shot that deflected off Shalla and past Palazzese. Saad picked up his second helper of the night on the captain's 26th of the year.
The Spirit out shot the Rangers 21-8 in the middle frame.
Kitchener got on the board with a power play tally at the halfway mark of the final period. Saginaw netminder Clint Windsor withstood a flurry of shots before Michael Catenacci was able to bury the puck glove side for his 18th. The goal extended the captain's scoring streak: Catenacci has collected five goals and five helpers over an eight-game run. Assisting on the play were Radek Faksa and Tobias Rieder, who has at least one point in nine consecutive games.
Brandon Saad added an unassisted empty net goal for the Spirit, making the final score 4-1.
Saginaw led shots on goal 15-11 in the third, finishing with a 51-38 overall advantage.
With the win, the Spirit improve to 24-22-0-5, while the Rangers' record sits at 33-14-1-0.
