PHILADELPHIA, PA - In his second game since returning from an ankle injury, Karri Ramo stopped 38 shots to lead the Norfolk Admirals (9-13-1-2) past the first-place Philadelphia Phantoms (16-7-1-0) 2-1 on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum.
After a scoreless opening period, both teams found the back of the net once in the second stanza. Justin Keller opened scoring for Norfolk at 10:56. After accepting a feed from Kyle Wanvig, Keller broke in alone on Philadelphia goaltender Brian Boucher. He sent a forehand shot underneath Boucher's pads and just over the goal line for his fourth goal of the season.
The Phantoms tied the game at one goal apiece just under three minutes later on a power play. Ryan Potulny one-timed a Jared Ross feed from the right circle past Norfolk netminder Karri Ramo at 13:45.
The Admirals got the go-ahead goal 6:54 into the final frame. Karl Stewart and Blair Jones broke in two-on-one on Boucher. Stewart sent a pass from the right circle to Jones near the bottom of the opposite circle, and Jones beat Boucher for a 2-1 Norfolk lead.
Ramo made the goal stand as the game-winner with 12 third-period stops. On the evening, he stopped 38 of 39 shots for his first victory of the season. Brian Boucher (17 shots, 15 saves) got the loss.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Philadelphia was 1-5.
The Admirals return to Norfolk to host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Stanley Cup tomorrow night. The Stanley Cup will be appearing starting at 6:00 and the puck drops for the game at 7:15. For more details, please visit norfolkadmirals.com.
