North Carolina FC News Release
Cary, NC - The Carolina RailHawks saw their playoff hopes dim as they were defeated by the Montreal Impact 2-0 after enduring a two hour lightning delay. Impact newcomer Peter Byers scored both goals for the Impact despite being a man down for most of the match. Nevio Pizzolito and Santiago Fusilier were both ejected from the match in the 14th and in the 76th minute respectively. Impact head coach John Limniatis was also sent off in the 20th minute.
After a two hour lightning delay the game finally got underway with fierce intensity as both teams needed to post a win. Montreal's Nevio Pizzolito was ejected in the 14th minute for an elbow to Ron Cerritos' head and a few minutes later Impact coach John Limniatis was dismissed by referee Chris Penso for dissent. Both teams created good chances but were unable to find the back of the net until the end of the half when Impact midfielder Pato Aguilera lobbed a long ball to newcomer Peter Byers who found himself alone in front of Chris McClellan and slotted the ball to his left for the 1-0 lead at the half.
The RailHawks continued to search for a tally inserting more firepower with Dan Antoniuk for defender Mauricio Segovia and in the 76th minute Santiago Fusilier was shown a red card for a foul on Cedric Jocqueviel bringing the teams level to ten men each. Montreal's Byers would find the back of the net again in the 83rd minute on a cross from Joey Gjertsen bringing the score to 2-0. Hamed Diallo and Santiago Fusililer both had really good scoring chances throughout the match but weren't able to capitalize on the ten shots on goal. The RailHawks are not mathematically out of the playoff picture but they will need to win their final four matches for a postseason berth
The RailHawks continue their quest for the post-season next Saturday, September 6th, at 7:30 p.m. as they host the Charleston Battery in a match that is also valid for the Southern Derby Cup Standings. Tickets for the match may be purchased at the LGFCU Box Office, by calling 919-859-KICK (5425), at all Ticketmaster outlets or by visiting www.carolinarailhawks.com.
