Charleston, S.C. (Tuesday, June 22, 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks were eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup by the Charleston Battery in the second round of the tournament 2-1 on Tuesday night. Greg Shields' goal in the 65th minute was not enough for the Railhawks to advance. The Battery had two first half goals with Rudolph Mayard and Lamar Neagle to finalize the score at 2-1 for the Battery. Charleston advances to play the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer next Tuesday, June 29.

The match started slow with both teams sizing each other up and the RailHawks controlling the ball well at midfield. Charleston had a clear chance in the 13th minute with a header by Ian Fuller that was easily saved by Reed. In the 23rd minute the Battery would get on the board with a header by Rudolph Mayard off a corner kick by Stephen Armstrong, Eric Reed came off his line and Mayard found the back of the net right underneath the post. The RailHawks picked up the pace a bit and almost found the equalizer in the 38th minute with a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box by David Hayes. The Battery, however, would respond immediately and in the 42nd minute added a tally with Lamar Neagle who skipped a tackle in the box and finished into the left corner sending the teams to the locker rooms with a 2-0 advantage for Charleston.

The second half was an all-Railhawks affair with most of the match being played in front of the Charleston box. The RailHawks attacked more and came close to scoring a few times. In the 65th minute Greg Shields tallied his first ever RailHawks goal off a rebound and a cross from Etienne Barbara. The goal, however would not prove to be enough as the RailHawks got eliminated from the US Open Cup for the second year in a row by a USL-2 team.

The RailHawks return home to host the Montreal Impact on Saturday June, 26 at 7 p.m. before embarking on another four-game road trip in July. June 26th will also be "Team Poster" night and fans will not want to miss out on this exciting giveaway.
