RailHawks Host Charlotte Eagles in First Round of US Open Cup

CARY, N.C (Monday, June 14, 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks begin their quest for the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. as they host the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division. The match will be on Field Two at WakeMed Soccer Park and all tickets are $5. In addition all draft beer will be only $1. "It will be nice to be playing at home after our long road trip," said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. "We are looking forward to playing against the Charlotte Eagles. We have a lot of respect for this team and for what they do both on and off the field. They are a long established franchise and we will have to be our best to advance to the next round."

The RailHawks and the Eagles have never met in competitive matches but have shared victories in pre-season games. Charlotte is coming off a 2-0 loss at home against the Real Maryland Monarchs and they are tied for third place in the USL-2 standings. They are led by forward Debola Ogunseye who has scored five goals so far in regular season.

Tuesday will be the first home game for the RailHawks in a month as they recently returned from a difficult four-game road trip where they earned eight out of a possible twelve points with two wins and two draws. Last Wednesday they drew the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 at Swangard Stadium in British Columbia. RailHawks leading scorer Etienne Barbara earned a 45th minute penalty to tie the game.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team that advances deepest into the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup also receives an automatic berth into the CONCACAF Champions League.

Next the RailHawks return to league play on Saturday June 19 as they host Crystal Palace Baltimore at 7 p.m. It will be "Bark in the Park" night and special dog tickets will benefit the Wake County SPCA. It will also be our Father's day celebration and all fathers in attendance will receive two passes to the 10th anniversary of the SAS Championship in September.
