North Carolina FC News Release
CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks (2W-2D-5L, 8pts.) lost to the New York Cosmos (4W-3D-1L, 15 pts.) 3-1 Saturday night at WakeMed Soccer Park. This is the first time the Cosmos have beaten the RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.
"We played a strong first half," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "We were playing possession, moving the ball, and Akira came up with some important saves. We know we know we have our work cut out for us to remain in post season contention. The only way to get out of this situation is to take a hard look at where we're falling short and address it as a team."
The RailHawks returned home and looked dominant early on. The team came out strong with persistent offensive pressure. The defense remained unbreakable, and ultimately provided multiple opportunities to forwards Nacho Novo and Tiyi Shipalane.
Within the first 15 minutes, theRailHawks had multiple opportunities on the Cosmo's goal, forcing their defense to clear the ball for a RailHawks corner kick. Off of the corner, Daniel Scott was able to sink his first goal of the season. The RailHawks continued to apply pressure throughout the first half while Akira Fitzgerald turned away the opposition.
After the half, Tyler Engel came in for Tiyi Shipalane, making his first professional appearance. Shortly after the whistle, Cosmos' midfielder Leo Fernandes scored for the away team, equalizing the score 1-1. Minutes later, the Cosmos found the RailHawks goal twice more with goals from Mkosana and Moffat, increasing their lead to 3-1.
The RailHawks countered the goals with attacks from Novo, da Luz and Nurse. In the 64th minute, Scott took a header off of another corner that was saved by Maurer. In the 72nd minute, Novo received a cross from Engel and took a shot that would eventually hit the post. The RailHawks continued to attack and add pressure, but ultimately lost 3-1.
The RailHawks will continue NASL play on Sunday, August 30th as they travel to James M. Shuart Stadium in New York to face off against the Cosmos for the second time in a week.
The RailHawks will return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday, September 4th at 7:30 PM to host the Atlanta Silverbacks.
