FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (4W-3D-3L) suffered their third defeat of the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season, Aug. 23 in a 2-0 loss to Fort Lauderdale Strikers (3W-4D-2L). 3,110 fans attended Clarke Field for the match presented by AMARewards.
Brazilian striker Stefano Pinho scored both goals for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the second half, despite a valiant performance in net by Eddies goalkeeper Tyson Farago.
Strikers had the first chance of the match on 19 minutes. Midfielder Gabriel beat the Eddies defense and went on a one-on-one with Farago, but his shot went wide of the goal. Moments later, Gabriel powerful shot towards Farago's net was blocked in front by defender Johann Smith.
Eddies midfielder Lance Laing generated the home side's first chance on 33 minutes. The Jamaican midfielder went for target from 30 yards out, but saw his attempt go just wide.
Both teams would head into the dressing room in a scoreless tie.
The Strikers broke the deadlock on 59 minutes from the penalty spot, with Pinho narrowly beating Farago to the right side of the net after Eddies defender Kareem Moses was called for a penalty inside the box.
The Eddies' first clear chance to level came midway through the half. Striker Tomi Ameobi got his head on the ball after a scramble in the box but Strikers 'keeper Josh Ford was able to thwart the attempt.
Seven minutes later, the Eddies received their best opportunity to level the match off a scramble in front of the net, but Ford was able to withstand a flurry of Eddies attempts to emerge from a hectic scramble unscathed.
The Strikers responded with another dangerous chance of their own, but Farago had an excellent save on Dani Sanchez's volley from close-range.
Fort Lauderdale added to their lead on 85 minutes. Stefano received a pass from the right wing, turned around and beat Farago for the second time in the match to secure the 2-0 win for the visiting side.
"Tyson played very well," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "We have to regroup, recharge. We win together and we lose together. From start to finish, we didn't get into second gear. We have to be better next week in Atlanta."
