CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks (1W-4D-2L, 7 pts.) tied the New York Cosmos (4W-3D-0L, 15 pts.) with a score of 2-2 on Saturday night at WakeMed Soccer Park.
"It was a great game of soccer. The Cosmos are a very dangerous team," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "We set up good plays and played well against them, but we couldn't get the result we worked so hard for."
In the seventh minute, the RailHawks set up a play in front of the Cosmos goal. Tiyi Shipalane sent a pass to Neil Hlavaty to give the RailHawks a one goal advantage. The RailHawks made multiple defensive plays throughout the remaining minutes, keeping the Cosmos off the board.
The first half of play was a tough fought duel with three yellow cards issued. The Cosmos received two yellow cards given to Szetela and Raî=BAl, while the RailHawks received one given to Kupono Low.
During the second half, the RailHawks came out strong on defense. RailHawks goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap made two spectacular saves preventing a close goal. In the 76th minute, Shipalane scored his second goal of the season to give the RailHawks a 2-0 advantage. Shipalane dribbled around one Cosmos defender, and found the back of the net.
In the 90th minute, the RailHawks gave up an own goal by Futty Danso that narrowed their lead to 2-1. The ball bounced off the RailHawks defender ending up in the back of the net. The Cosmos almost tied the game during the end of regulation, but Gilstrap was able to deflect the ball to keep the RailHawks in the lead for the time being.
In the 95th minute, however, the Cosmos tied the game 2-2 after Flores stroked a deflected ball from outside the box. After drawing this game, the RailHawks remain unbeaten by the Cosmos at Wake Med Soccer Park.
The RailHawks will travel to Fort Lauderdale for the eighth game of the Spring Season on Saturday, May 23rd to face off with the Strikers. The match will be broadcast live on WRAL2.
The RailHawks will return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday, May 27th, when they host the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The RailHawks will host the winner of the Second Round match between the Upward Stars (NPSL) and Charlotte Independence (USL).
