North Carolina FC News Release

CARY, N.C. - The Carolina RailHawks picked up their ninth win of the season Saturday, downing the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 before 4,008 at WakeMed Soccer Park.

It's the first time the RailHawks have defeated Vancouver at WakeMed Soccer Park in three tries, and it also matches the RailHawks win total for the entire 2008 season.

Gregory Richardson scored the game's first goal in the 44th minute, and Sallieu Bundu added one in the 65th.

As the match approached halftime, Richardson took a ball from John Cunliffe on the left side. Richardson went one-v-one with Vancouver defender Wes Knight and beat him to the endline. Richardson flung a ball toward goal, and it took a deflection off Vancouver defender Marco Reda and snuck past goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

In the 65th minute, Brian Plotkin played Bundu into space. Bundu raced by defender Wes Charles, and Nolly came off his line. Bundu and the Vancouver goalkeeper met at the top of the penalty area, and the ball popped up in the air. Bundu and Nolly both continued to pursue it. As the ball came back toward the field, Bundu beat Nolly to it and knocked the ball into the open goal.

Charles Gbeke drew a goal back in the 90th minute for Vancouver, but the RailHawks killed off the final few minutes of stoppage time to pick up their second straight league win.

The RailHawks (9-4-3) will play again on Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park. They will meet Estudiantes Tecos, of the Mexican First Division, at 7 p.m. in the third edition of Futbol Tecate.
