Cary, NC - The Carolina RailHawks (1W-0D-0L, 3pts.) defeated Minnesota United FC (0W-0D-1L, 0pts.) in a challenging match by a score of 3-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park on Independence Day.
"We looked sharper," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke, "Tonight was a great way to start the second portion of the season. This is what we have been working on and talking about for the last three weeks. Now our movements are sharper and more effective."
The RailHawks came out strong after the break. The first ten minutes of the game were dominated by the RailHawks, who relentlessly made advances. As the offensive pressure continued into the 15th minute, Simone Bracalello took a shot from outside the box, scoring a beautiful goal in the top right corner. Under two minutes later, a shot from Albadawi hit the crossbar, ultimately providing Shipalane a chance to follow up with a shot on goal.
After blocking many advances from Minnesota United, including a wide save in the 21st minute, newly re-signed goal keeper, Akira Fitzgerald, was unable to block a shot from Minnesota United's Daniel Mendes. Both teams endured the rest of the half, fighting to maintain possession.
In the second half, the RailHawks created multiple scoring opportunities. Plays from Wells Thompson, Austin De Luz, and Simone Bracalello continued the RailHawks momentum. In the 57th minute, a breakaway by da Luz allowed the RailHawks to score the final goal. Shortly thereafter, Thompson was shown a red card that would leave the RailHawks handicapped for the remainder of the match.
Despite having a disadvantage, the RailHawks defense remained strong. Stalwart and Captain Connor Tobin kept pressure on Minnesota's offense, while Fitzgerald tirelessly made saves, leading the team to a 3 to 1 victory.
The RailHawks will continue their fall season against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at WakeMed Soccer Park on July 8th at 7:30 pm ET.
