Minnesota United FC News Release
CARY, N.C. (Saturday, July 4th, 2015) -- Minnesota United's Fall Season didn't start according to plan, losing 3-1 on the road to the Carolina RailHawks. After falling behind early in the match, United struggled to make a comeback and get chances late in the match.
Carolina put United on its heels early with two quick goals in as many minutes. Former United player Simone Bracalello scored the opening goal with an excellent rip from distance off a RailHawks throw in. Shortly after, Austin da Luz tried to chip United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock, but the ball bounced off the crossbar and back into play. RailHawks midfielder Tiyi Shipalane tapped home the rebound to double the lead for his side.
Minnesota was able to cut the deficit in half and get back in the game a few minutes later. Kevin Venegas, playing in the midfield this week for the Loons, won the ball and ran towards the endline to play a cross through the penalty area. He found Daniel Mendes running toward goal to tap home the ball and get United on the board.
The RailHawks would regain its two-goal advantage early in the second half. Da Luz cut past a defender before taking a shot that was stopped by Ndjock as he rushed toward the ball. Ndjock was unable to control the rebound and Da Luz placed the ball into the empty net to make it 3-1 for Carolina.
A few minutes later, Wells Thompson received his second yellow card, giving Minnesota a man advantage for 30 minutes. The Loons couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and they opened the Fall Season with a loss.
United returns home on July 11th to play Ottawa Fury at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and you can secure your seats today by calling 763.4SOCCER or visiting MNUnitedFC.com/tickets.
