CARY, N.C. - Carolina RailHawks defender John Gilkerson has been named to the USL-1 Team of the Week for the second week in a row, USL-1 announced Tuesday.

"It's a great honor and confidence booster to be named to the Team of the Week," said RailHawks defender John Gilkerson. "You are only as good as the people you play with and by playing with Stewart, Schulte and McKenney that really takes a lot off my shoulders. Also knowing we have a great goalkeeper behind us, whether it is Reed or Patterson, allows us to play with peace of mind."

"John started the season really well," said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. "He's an elite athlete and is really starting to fulfill his promise. I am really happy he has made Team of the Week twice in the first few weeks of the season and I expect him to continue and do really well."

Gilkerson was honored for his work in helping to secure the RailHawks' second straight shutout during last Thursday's scoreless draw in Portland. Gilkerson came on as an 88th minute substitute in Saturday's second game against Portland, a 2-0 loss. He was on Team of the Week for Week 3 for his role in the RailHawks' 1-0 win over Minnesota on April 26 at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Gilkerson and the RailHawks will next take the field on Saturday, when they welcome the Charleston Battery to WakeMed Soccer Park. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
