Austin Aztex FC vs. Puerto Rico Islanders -- Nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel
May 5, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - During the fall each year, cameras and national broadcast teams converge on Austin and the University of Texas at DKR-Memorial Stadium to cover Texas football. This Friday, May 8, cameras and a national broadcast team will make its way to Austin and a stadium just a few miles north of the UT campus where it will cover Texas football/soccer. Fox Soccer Channel will be in town this Friday as the Austin Aztex FC is the host team taking on the Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL-First Division's Game of the Week. To accommodate the national television audience, kickoff is set for 7pm.
For the Aztex this is the first of five nationally televised games this season on Fox Soccer Channel. The other home game nationally televised will be on June 5th against the Charleston Battery. In addition, the Aztex will be featured on FSC for three away games (June 12 @ Puerto Rico, July 3 @ Cleveland, and August 23 @ Montreal).
This Friday's matchup is a rematch of the pre-season contest between the Puerto Rico Islanders and Aztex, which resulted in a 0-0 tie. The Islanders come to Austin with a 2-0-1 record and in 3rd place in the standings. The Islanders were considered a pre-season favorite to repeat as regular season champions from 2008, especially after the team made it all the way to the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, where it lost to Mexican power, Cruz Azul.
If any media would like to interview Aztex Owner-President Phil Rawlins, Head Coach Adrian Heath, or any Aztex players before this week's game, please contact Kyle Dalton at 512-415-8932.
