North Carolina FC News Release
The Carolina RailHawks are set to play another MLS team this season. On September 4th the RailHawks will travel to New Britain, Connecticut to face the New England Revolution in the semi final match of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
The RailHawks reached this fixture by defeating the Richmond Kickers 1-0 last night with a beautiful shot by Connally Edozien. The Revolution, tonight, defeated the other USL-2 team still in the tournament, the Harrisburg City Islanders 2-1, giving the RailHawks the opportunity to measure up against another MLS team this season.
The Carolina RailHawks are 2-0-0 against MLS teams, having defeated Chivas USA 2-0 in an exhibition game on May 8th and the Chicago Fire 1-0 in the third round of the US Open Cup on July 15th. The New England Revolution, however, will be a true test of the RailHawks talent; they are currently leading the MLS' Eastern Conference with 33 points and are poised to become one of the top contenders in the chase for the MLS Cup.
The RailHawks will travel to New Britain, Conn. after having played their final home regular season match against the Portland Timbers on September 1st, and before beginning a three game road trip that will also take them to Minnesota and San Francisco. Should the RailHawks defeat the Revolution, they will face the winner of the other US Open Cup semifinal between the Dallas Burn and the Seattle Sounders with the possibility of an all USL-1 final for the first time since the Pro Era and MLS teams joined the competition.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is one of the oldest tournaments of its kind. Dating back to 1914 Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States. In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country's league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer.
