Cary, NC - The Carolina RailHawks defeated the Charleston Battery 3-1 on Saturday night in a truly electrifying match that saw the RailHawks relentlessly search for the win. Kupono Low, Steven Curfman and, making his WakeMed Soccer Park debut, Rey Martinez tallied the goals for the RailHawks while Aaron King scored the lone goal for Charleston.
The first half started with the RailHawks on the attack as Ronald Cerritos created chances for forwards Hamed Diallo and Dan Antoniuk. Both teams took the physical route as Osvaldo Alonso and Ronald Cerritos were forced to leave the game early for injuries sustained on the pitch. In the 20th minute Hamed Diallo was brought down in the box and center referee Jeff Gontarek was swift in pointing to the penalty spot. Kupono Low transformed the PK slotting the ball to the right of Battery keeper Dusty Hudock.
The RailHawks found the back of the net again in the first half when Matt Watson found an open Steven Curfman who shot a diagonal rocket from the top of the 18 yard box into the bottom left corner of the net fixing the score at 2-0 at the half.
The second half started with the same intensity that ended the first with the RailHawks almost putting another one past Hudock early on in the 47th minute with Diallo beating the Battery goalkeeper but the referees called the play offside. In the 66th minute Dan Antoniuk found himself alone in front of the Battery Goal and shot a rocket that hit the crossbar and was deflected right over by Hudock. The battery would find a goal just 2 minutes later when Ian Fuller gave the go ahead ball to Aaron King who beat the RailHawks defense and Chris McClellan bringing the score to 2-1.
This match marked the WakeMed Soccer Park debut of Rey Martinez and the signing of the Cuban midfielder paid its dividends in the 86th minute when he volleyed a ball, received by Watson, in the back of the net fixing the score at 3-1.
The RailHawks continue their quest for the seventh playoff spot on Sunday, September 14 at 6:00 p.m. as they host the Rochester Rhinos. Tickets for this and all RailHawks events are still available at the LGFCU Box Office, by calling 919-859-KICK (5425), at all Ticketmaster outlets or by visiting www.carolinarailhawks.com.
