Charleston Battery News Release
Cary, NC - The Charleston Battery (10-10-7, 37 points) lost to the Carolina Railhawks (7-11-9, 30 points) Saturday night by a score of three goals to one at Wake Med Soccer Stadium in front of 2,977. After conceding twice in the first half a goal from substitute forward Aaron King gave the Battery a lifeline with twenty minutes to play, but a third goal put the game beyond doubt as the Railhawks recorded a fifth consecutive win versus Charleston.
The first chance of the game fell to the Railhawks in the 6th minute after Charleston conceded a free-kick 20 yards out. Veteran midfielder Ronald Cerritos bent the ensuing shot around the wall but Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock parried the ball away at the right post.
Carolina broke the deadlock in the 21st minute after forward Hamed Diallo drew a penalty under a challenge from Kevin Nylen. Hudock guessed correctly and dove to block Kupono Low's attempt but couldn't prevent the ball from flying into the right side of the goal.
The Railhawks scored a second in the 44th minute after Nylen inadvertently redirected a cross into his own goal.
Just before the break the Battery finally created a chance as Mike Richardson ran onto a long pass on the left side. Richardson hit a sharp full-volley but just missed the target, slamming his shot into the side netting.
Aaron King pulled a goal back for the Battery in the 68th minute with a neat finish after a splendid through-ball from midfielder Ian Fuller.
Charleston pressed forward looking for an equalizer but substitute forward Ray Martinez' 86th minute strike ensured Carolina of victory.
The Battery heads to Portland, OR next Thursday for a 10 PM match versus the Portland Timbers (REAL 1340 AM).
