Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats left eight men on base in the first five innings and the visiting Winnipeg Goldeyes built a 4-0 lead early, hanging on for a 7-3 win in front of 3,066 fans Sunday afternoon at U. S. Steel Yard, salvaging a win in the three-game series.
The RailCats won the first two games of the series with great starting pitching and clutch hitting, but Sunday the RailCats were never able to get the big base hit and could not erase their early deficit. Garret Holleran (0-2) threw 79 pitches in the first three innings, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks despite stranding five Winnipeg baserunners.
The RailCats were down 3-0 in the bottom of the second and had a glorious chance to tie the game, loading the bases with no one out. Goldeyes starter Brandon Kintzler, however, struck out Rob Marconi and got John McCarthy to line into an inning-ending double play at second base, keeping the RailCats off the board. The 'Cats again loaded the bases with one out in the fifth but got only one run when Mike Rohde delivered a two-out single. Tanner Townsend tried to score the third run of the inning on Rohde's hit - Jay Pecci had scored earlier on a passed ball - but was thrown out at the plate.
Winnipeg scored a run in the first inning on a Tydus Meadows groundout. Demetrius Heath singled in a run in the second inning and Meadows delivered a sacrifice fly to score another run that inning. Jamar Hill hit his fifth home run in the year in the third to round out Holleran's night.
Steve Haake broke out of an 0-for-15 slump with a 3-for-4 game and delivered a two-out double in the seventh inning to make the score 6-3, but the RailCats would get no closer. Winnipeg got two big runs in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run Antoin Gray single, and Kevin West had an RBI single with two outs in the eighth.
Haake wasn't the only RailCat to have a good night, as Townsend joined Haake with three hits. The RailCats third baseman went 7-for-12 in the series and hit his 19th double of the year in the first. Pecci and Rohde each had two of the RailCats' 12 hits.
Ryan Ariail (4-1) pitched 1.2 innings in relief to earn the win, with Ariail, Aaron Jackson and Cristian Mendoza combining to surrender only three hits to the RailCats in 4.2 innings. Hill had three hits to pace the 10-hit Goldeyes attack.
The RailCats (31-33) and Goldeyes (33-31) will take Monday off and then begin a second three-game series Tuesday at 7 p.m., this time at Canwest Park in Winnipeg. Drew Dickinson (3-5, 5.94 ERA) will take the ball for the RailCats Tuesday against Winnipeg left-hander Zach Baldwin (4-3, 4.38). That game will be broadcast live on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com .
