Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - Coming off of Saturday night's victory, the Schaumburg Flyers were not looking to settle for a mere series split with the Kansas City T-Bones. The Flyers wanted the sweep on Sunday afternoon, and they went toe-to-toe with the visitors through eight full innings. In the top of the ninth, however, T-Bones DH Ken Harvey (3-for-5, RBI) sent a home run out to center field to lead things off, and it propelled his team to a 8-7 victory over the Flyers.

Schaumburg (23-42) took the early momentum even after a Kansas City (33-31) push. The T-Bones put up two runs in the top of the first against starter Brian Finch, but the home team fought back hard in the bottom half. Three straight singles loaded the bases with nobody out to begin the inning, which allowed Flyers DH Calvin Pickering (0-for-3, RBI) to hit a sacrifice fly that scored SS Mark Haske (3-for-4, 3 R) to make it 2-1. The very next batter would give Schaumburg the lead, as RF Peanut Williams (1-for-5, 3 RBI) sent a home run high over the scoreboard in left field to score three men and make the score 4-2. It was Williams' ninth home run of the season, and his second in his last two games.

A two run lead became a three run lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by LF Jermaine Allensworth (3-for-4, 2 RBI). That would be the biggest advantage for the Flyers in the game. The T-Bones got an RBI single from 1B Jim Fasano (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and a groundout to score a run from C Craig Hurba (0-for-5, RBI) to cut the Flyers lead to 5-4.

That lead was erased on an RBI single by 2B Steve Trout (1-for-5, RBI) and the second RBI double of the game from RF Mike Jacobs (3-for-5, 2 RBI) in the fourth. Suddenly, Kansas City stood on top 6-5 on four runs in two innings.

The advantage would not last long. Schaumburg C Lance Koenig (1-for-3, RBI) took the second pitch he saw to lead off the fourth into the Bud Light Party Patio, tying the game at six apiece. Unfortunately, what the baseball gods giveth, they also taketh away. In the top of the fifth, Kansas City's Jim Fasano did unto the Flyers what they did to his team, launching a solo shot to right-center that gave the visitors another one run lead at 7-6.

The nail-biter continued into the eighth inning, when Mark Haske again reached base to spark the Flyers offense. A two-base error off his bat placed Haske on second with one out, and Jermaine Allensworth singled into left field to score Haske and tie the game at seven apiece. The hit came against Kansas City closer David Trahan (2-1), who was gunning for a save in one-and-two-thirds innings.

In the end, the blown save turned into a win for Trahan. The first T-Bone at the plate in the top of the ninth was Ken Harvey, and he took a Lonnie Patterson (1-1) pitch just over the leaping reach of Flyers CF Rob Fischer (1-for-5) for a home run. Fischer had stolen a home run from Harvey on July 19th, but he was not as fortunate this time, as the slugger touched them all for the sixth time this year to make it 8-7. The only hit the Flyers could manage in the ninth came off the bat of Fischer with two outs, as 1B Chris Gaskin (2-for-3, 2 BB) was put out to strand Fischer and end the game.

The Flyers will get a day of relaxation at their 10th Annual Charity Golf Outing at Villa Olivia Country Club in Bartlett on Monday, and get back to work on Tuesday in Joliet against the JackHammers. LHP Brad Mumma (5-5, 5.10) is scheduled to start for Schaumburg, while RHP Nate Sevier (4-3, 4.09) should take the hill for Joliet. The action will begin at 6:05 p.m., and you can follow it all on flyersbaseball.com.
