RailCats Sign Record-Setting Pitcher Jason Shelley for 2007

Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that pitcher Jason Shelley has agreed to contractual terms for the 2007 season. RailCats manager Greg Tagert made the announcement.

Shelley spent the 2006 season with the RailCats, leading the Northern League in strikeouts (145) and finishing second in victories (12). He also set the all-time league record for most games started in a season (25) and set RailCats club records in single-season victories, strikeouts, innings pitched, and starts. Overall, Shelley was 12-8 with a 3.75 earned run average during the regular season, and 1-0 in two playoff starts.

Shelley's best games came against divisional rivals Joliet and Schaumburg. He went 5-0 in six starts against Joliet including a victory on September 4th in the special one game second half tie-breaker to send the RailCats into the playoffs. On August 17th, he struck out 13 Schaumburg batters in a game to tie a club record, and then struck out 12 Schaumburg hitters on August 31st.

Shelley began his professional career in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1999 and later played in the Milwaukee Brewers system. He was the 2003 Baseball America Independent League Player of the Year after going 7-1, 0.85 with Rockford in the Frontier League.

The RailCats currently have 15 players under contract for 2007. Besides Shelley, the others are pitchers David Byard, Tony Cogan, Steve Edsall, Travis Kerber, Brad Mumma, and Stephen Spragg; catchers Steve Ketter and Jose Yepez; infielders Eric McNamee, Jay Pecci, and Tanner Townsend; and outfielders Jermaine Allensworth, Dale Mueller, and Mike Reese. The RailCats also maintain contractual rights to 11 other players who have not yet signed for 2007. They include pitchers Willie Glen, Josh Habel, Kris Regas, and Pete Sikaras; catcher Steve Booth; infielders Jarrod Patterson and Alex Taylor; and outfielders Mike Coles, Steve Haake, Andy Rohleder and Kevin White.

The RailCats open the 2007 season on May 17th at U. S. Steel Yard against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. RailCats 2007 ticket packages and merchandise are available at U. S. Steel Yard or by calling (219) 882-2255.
