RailCats Make Comeback to Defeat RedHawks 14-11

FARGO, N.D. - The Gary Southshore RailCats scored eight runs in the seventh after trailing by six, then scored three more in the ninth to come away with a 14-11 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of a crowd of 4,171 at Newman Outdoor Field Sunday.

The RailCats capitalized off the RedHawks bullpen in the seventh. Gary picked up 7 hits in the top half after trailing 9-3, including a Cristian Guerrero bases-clearing double that gave the RailCats an 11-9 lead - Guerrero's second hit of the inning.

Fargo-Moorhead responded in the bottom half by tying the game at 11-11, with RBI singles by Nic Jackson and Tim Alberts.

After a scoreless eighth, Mike Massaro drove in Adam Klein from third on an RBI single for the eventual game-winning run in the ninth. Three more runners reached base before Danny Pulfer's bases-loaded walk and Brian Kolb's sacrifice fly brought the final margin to 14.

Both teams combined for 37 hits in the ballgame. The RedHawks had seven different pitchers appear in the game, while the RailCats used five.

Fargo-Moorhead (15-15) had multiple players with multi-hit games. Mitch Einertson went 4-for-6 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Jackson batted 3-for-6 with a double and two runs. Alberts hit a grand slam in the first and Keith Brachold hit a two-run home run in the second to give the RedHawks a 6-0 lead early - while both picked up two hits and combined to drive in seven runs.

Every player in the Gary SouthShore (14-13) lineup reached base on a hit, including four players with three hits each. Guerrero and Danny Pulfer had three hits with three RBIs each.

Taylor Stanton pitched six innings allowing 10 hits and three earned runs in the no-decision. Joe Harris dropped to 2-3 on the season after allowing two runs (one earned) in two innings of relief.

Clay Zavada (2-1) picked up the relief win after throwing the final two innings for the RailCats. Morgan Coombs started for Gary, giving up nine runs (six earned) in 4 2/3 innings. Taylor Sewitt pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The RedHawks begin a 10-game road trip Monday at 6:05 p.m. in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. Fargo-Moorhead will play all 10 games against Can-Am League opponents.
