
RailCats Announce Trade

Gary, Ind.âThe Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced a trade today with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League.
The RailCats sent pitcher Bryan Shartzer and catcher Rickey Clinton to the Otters in exchange for pitcher Mike Schaefer and outfielder Terrence McClain.
Schaefer, 24, pitched for new RailCats manager Greg Tagert with the Springfield-Ozark Ducks of the Frontier League in 2004. Schaefer started 19 games and posted a record of 4-9 with a 4.85 earned run average in his first year of professional baseball. He completed his college career in 2003 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, posting a record of 7-2 with a 2.77 ERA. He also played college ball at the University of Iowa.
"Mike is a tremendous competitor with a lot of ability," said Tagert. "He is only going to get better; which is exactly what we are looking for when acquiring pitchers with his type of experience."
McClain spent the 2004 season with Evansville and batted .262 with five home runs and 40 runs batted in. He also played for Evansville in 2003 and spent one year in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.
Shartzer spent the 2004 season with the RailCats as a reliever, going 4-2 with a 5.94 ERA in 33 games.
Clinton batted .153 with two home runs and seven RBI in 44 games with the RailCats in 2004. He also appeared in 11 games with the RailCats in 2003, batting .256.
The RailCats 2005 home opener is set for May 23 against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats. The RailCats will host the Northern League All-Star Game on July 19. For 2005 ticket information, call (219) 882-BALL (2255).
